Kawai upright Pianos have a rich history. The founder of the brand, Koichi Kawai was born in 1886. His next door neighbor was Torakusu Yamaha. While working for Yamaha, Kawai helped design one of the earliest pianos ever made in Japan when he was only twelve years old. Kawai gained wide experience while he was working for Yamaha, which eventually saw him establish his own company known as Kawai Musical Instrument Research Laboratory in 1927. By 1928, Kawai had produced the first keyboard actions ever to be exclusively designed and assembled in Japan. He manufactured his first grand piano in 1929. Kawai was finally laid to rest in 1955.

All Kawai uprights have been designed with a grand piano sound in mind, making their users experience real joy in piano playing. Kawai has become the preferred choice among institutions of learning, leading music venues, and international piano competitions. It is the piano of choice for world class musicians such as Alex Allessandroni, Stephen Curtis Chapman, and Carol Connors. Kawai has two distinguished owners. In the USA, it is owned by Kawai America Corporation, while in CANADA, it is owned by Kawai Canada Music.
Kawai upright pianos are manufactured using the world’s most advanced actions. All Kawai uprights are designed with an ultra-responsive, direct-blow action that delivers outstanding feel and touch to piano lovers. The soundboard and ribs are designed using top-quality, straight grained dapper that ensures superb lively range and exceptional tone across the whole spectrum of sound. The harp or plates of Kawai upright pianos are constructed to the most accurate specifications, factoring in the natural resonance, to guarantee exceptional acoustical performance.
All top-of-the-range Kawai upright pianos utilize hard Rock Maple in bridge construction to ensure proper transmission of vibrations from the strings to the soundboard. The bridges are then carefully notched up to eradicate “wild strings” buzzing. What’s more! The powerful, multi-layered assembly of the back posts of a Kawai upright ensures outstanding structural integrity and superior tuning stability for years of consistent performance. The pin blocks and the keys are also of superior quality. To cap it all, Kawai upright comes with a twelve year transferable warranty on all of its pianos to protect the value of user investment.

Beautiful Kawai CX-21D Perfect for home/family use. Sounds great! Comes with bench. This is one of the Japanese-made Kawais, which are built better than the ones built in China. I’m a piano technician and picky about my pianos, so I tried out a few before I settled on this one. It has a great action and beautiful tone. It’s a really nice instrument. As I mentioned, I’m a piano tech, so the piano has been kept well tuned. I installed a Dampp-Chaser humidity control system in the piano, which is a $500 value, and means that the piano has been well cared for over the past winter. Again, it’s a beautiful instrument and I hate to let it go, but I can’t take it with me!

3. Kawai Upright Piano BS-1A
The piano has been kept tuned but very mildly played. While there have been several musicians in the family, no on played the piano as their main instrument. The dimensions are approximately 23″ deep, 59.5″ long and 47.5″ high. The estimated price is $1599 and it was manufactured in 1993.
Genuine Japanese built Kawai piano in a contemporary European style case in gloss black. Similar size to the Yamaha U1 & Yamaha U3, mellower in tone. Responsive action and deep tone make for a piano suitable for pianists of all levels.
This piano is a kin to the new pianos Kawai are producing today, due to the great development that occurred during the 1960s and 70s. Kawai have known not to change the formula that works, and so have only tweaked this model in recent years. This is reflective of what a fine instrument this is, representing the best of Japanese piano craftsmanship. This instrument sacrifices very little in terms of sound quality, tone and depth despite its age.

6. Kawai UST-8 Studio Upright
A really nice looking and sounding kawai ust-8 studio upright. It has a satin ebony finish and was made in 2002. A young piano. A great pro quality piano. Player’s know kawai for their warmth and excellent touch. Best thing is…the footprint of this Kawai is relatively small, but it has a big voice. The Studio series pianos were built with a more rigid structure, which translates into better tone projection and were some of the top selling Kawai pianos to date.
7. Kawai UST-9 Professional Studio Upright Piano, 46″
A 2007 Kawai 46″ Professional Studio Upright Piano, Model UST-9. Satin walnut finish, with newly upgraded padded bench. It had only light to moderate use. Recently tuned to standard A440 pitch, fully regulated, and cleaned inside and out. Excellent playing action and tone; very good cosmetic condition. Compared to the shorter console style Kawai models, this one has noticeably deeper bass, a sweeter tone, and a bigger, richer overall sound. This one is comparable in design and quality to Yamaha’s excellent 45″ upright, Model P22, but many people prefer this model to the U1 because of its tone, especially for classical music. The UST-9 is a new, improved model which replaced 2 older studio models : the highly-rated UST-7, and the UST-8C, which was a more lightweight economy model. It features the Millennium III action: some wooden internal moving parts that do not affect the tone are now made with carbon fiber parts, which don’t warp, shrink, or swell as the humidity in the air fluctuates.
Model UST-9 was designed to meet the demanding needs of schools and institutions, for a medium-height practice and performance piano, that has a rugged but portable cabinet, excellent tone, a uniformly responsive touch, and high quality action parts, that hold up well under heavy use. The double rubber casters allow you to move it easily on any surface, without leaving marks on the floor, and without having to put it on a dolly. The UST-9 has unbreakable front legs, braced with toe blocks like a full-size upright, instead of the decorative-but-fragile legs of a console style upright. Other features include an extra-wide music desk lined with leather, for holding sheet music; A soft pedal plus 2 sustain pedals (full sustain and bass-only); and lockable lid and keyboard cover.
Studio pianos have been a best-seller among schools and institutions for years, but they are also the first choice of many people for home use, for the same reasons. If you lack the space for a grand, or don’t want to invest $10,000 to $15,000 for a full-size upright, this is an affordable option that doesn’t compromise on quality. “The Piano Book”, which is the best piano buyer’s guide on the market, gives Kawai studio uprights a 4-star rating for both quality and performance, the same as Yamaha.
Kawai has been making fine quality pianos since the company was founded in Japan in 1927. Today they are the world’s 2nd largest piano maker, next to Yamaha. While Yamaha has diversified into manufacturing nearly every type of instrument, pianos and keyboards have remained Kawai’s specialty. In addition to their own pianos, Kawai also manufactures the “Boston Piano” line for Steinway and Sons. The Boston pianos are designed by Steinway, and sold only through authorized Steinway dealers.

Kawai K Series Professional Upright
Within this series you can find pianos of various heights ranging from 114 to 134 cm. Of course, the general rule of thumb applies here: ‘The higher the piano, the fuller and deeper the sound.’
The K-200 is the most compact piano from Kawai in the upright K-series. The new design and the processed sound concept of the K-200 are very convincing. The Millennium III mechanism responds to all the nuances you make in your attack, giving you the space to provide your game with rich expression. The sound of the Kawai K-200 is warm and round, with a beautiful depth in the sound.
The solid soundboard of the K-200 is made of specially selected spruce wood. The soundboard and the ribs are the most important components of an acoustic piano when it comes to sound production. Both the use of the material and the way in which the piano is built have a great influence on the sound volume and the sound quality. The pine wood and the precise construction of the soundboard provide the warm round sound of the Kawai K-200 piano.
The Millennium mechanism has been part of the Kawai wings for years. Meanwhile, the mechanism is also taken over in the pianos, including the small K-200. The special feature of this mechanism is the seamless integration of ABS carbon parts with wooden parts. A mechanism is traditionally only made of wood, but Kawai saw room for innovation. The result is a stable, precise and very durable mechanism. Carbon does not work (expand and shrink) under the influence of humidity and temperature, as wood does. The mechanism is also lighter so that the mechanism is 16% faster than a full wooden mechanism in a piano. You will therefore also be able to notice that the piano has a slight touch.
This K-200 is made of Ebony Polish (black gloss) and brass, but there are also other versions available. Since the Kawai K-200 is a new piano and is therefore ordered directly from the manufacturer, you can choose from everything Kawai has to offer in terms of appearance and finish. Choose the K-200 from a combination of Ebony Polish, Ebony Satin, Mahogany Polish, Mahogany Satin or White Polish and brass or chrome fittings.
In addition to pianos with the same appearance as the K-200, a classic buffet piano, Kawai also designed pianos with an appearance that reminds of a concert grand piano through the integrated desk. All in all a beautiful series of pianos.
The new K-300 is based on the K-3, which is recognized in many countries worldwide. But even what is good can still be improved. The wooden construction was expanded by 5 frames, the cast iron plate with 2 reinforcing screws even more firmly connected to the frame construction. The result is an even fuller and rounder sound, which is perfectly enhanced by the solid soundboard. Extended keys and the unrivaled precise Millennium III mechanism give the optimum control at the softest pianissimo and the strongest forte.
Undoubtedly, the K-400 belongs to the class of concert pianos. Because the size of the 1.5-square-foot massive soundboard can at least take up a small wing. His desired curvature is kept in shape by 12 ribs. All technical details that are found with the “smaller” pianos of the K-series are of course also to be found in the K-400.
The Kawai K-500 , with its height of 130 cm, is the ideal instrument for the pianist with great ambitions. Its strong, solid construction with the large solid soundboard of high-quality spruce produces an extremely powerful and warm sound. Technical details such as Duplex scale and the Neotex keyboard layer increase the sound spectrum and playing feel on the K-500. The extended keys and the Millennium III mechanism guarantee the best control over the attack. The pianos from the K-series have an elegant design and are equipped with steel pedals with a brass top layer. Attractive details are the wide desk and the slowly closing soft-fall keyboard cover.
The Kawai K800 is the top of the K series. Every pianist dreams of a grand piano. However, where local conditions do not permit the installation of a wing in terms of space, it is the right spot for the Kawai K800. The shape of the console, the key flap, then of course the sostenuto pedal and the beautiful full sound give the pianist the feeling of being behind a grand piano perfectly.
- KAWAI piano from the new K-series, type K-800 with enchanting sound.
- Stylish cabinet with front legs and top without hinge.
- Front panel with large desk.
- Excellent transition between the high, middle and low register.
- Very good tone definition also with the basses.
- Stable construction with 5 runners (beams) at the rear.
- Soft-fall keyboard cover that can not fall on the fingers.
